Pursuit
Ends with the Arrest of a
Fugitive
On
Friday, August 28, 2009
the Bonifay Police
Department was conducting
roadside checkpoints in
participation with the
Over The Limit,
Under Arrest
campaign. The checkpoint
was scheduled to last
from 9:00pm until 2:00am,
but was cut short by a
driver who decided to try
and avoid a traffic
citation. The incident
began at approximately
11:00pm when the
checkpoint was being
conducted at the
intersection of St.
Johns Road and
County Road 173. The
driver of the car has
been identified as James
Samuel Tomlin (B/M 37
YOA) from the Bonifay
area and formerly a
resident of Jacksonville.
Tomlin performed an
illegal
U-turn in a
curve as he approached
the checkpoint and
quickly accelerated in
the opposite direction.
An officer who observed
the act immediately
attempted to stop the
vehicle for the
infraction. However,
Tomlin refused to yield
and began to attempt to
outrun the officer. The
pursuit continued down
several streets, with
Tomlin paying no
attention to stop signs
or other motorists. The
pursuit continued just
outside the city limits
to a residential trailer
park where Tomlin fled
the pursuing officers on
foot. The K-9 tracking
team from Holmes
Correctional Institution
responded and tracked the
suspect to nearby
Interstate 10 where the
scent was lost.
Information was obtained
from a family member that
Tomlin had obtained a
ride and was enroute to a
residence in Washington
County. Tomlin was
contacted via cell phone
and advised that warrants
would be obtained for his
arrest. A short time
later, Tomlin arrived at
the scene and surrendered
himself to law
enforcement. Tomlin was
placed under arrest and
transported to the Holmes
County Jail on charges of
willful and wanton
reckless driving, fleeing
and attempting to elude a
law enforcement officer
and driving while license
suspended/revoked.
The Bonifay Police
Department greatly
appreciates the
assistance provided by
members of the Holmes
County Correctional
Institution K-9 Tracking
Team, the Holmes County
Sheriffs Office and
the Florida Highway
Patrol for the
performance of their
duties in this
incident, stated
Chief Chris Wells.

EXHIBITIONIST
APPREHENDED
Since
July, the Bonifay Police
Department has been
actively investigating
several cases of indecent
exposure. The incidents
began on July 16th when
the first report was
received by law
enforcement. Since that
time, a total of five
incidents were reported
through August 6th. Most
of the incidents occurred
in the parking lots of
local businesses. A
suspect and vehicle
description was obtained
from each victim, which
was very consistent. A
time-line was established
and extra manpower was
utilized during peak
hours in hopes of
apprehending the suspect.
The investigation came to
an end yesterday (August
10th) when one of the
victims spotted the
suspect vehicle and then
notified the Bonifay
Police Department. The
suspect was subsequently
stopped for
identification and
further investigation.
The suspect, identified
as Michael Nathaniel
Simmons (W/M 27 YOA) of
Bonifay, admitted his
involvement to law
enforcement. Simmons was
placed under arrest and
transported to the Holmes
County Jail on four
misdemeanor charges of
exposure of sexual organs
and two felony charges of
lewd or lascivious
exhibition. It is
believed that more
victims exist that for
whatever reason have not
filed a report with law
enforcement. Anyone that
has information on this
or some other crime is
asked to contact the
Bonifay Police Department
at 850-547-3661 or

Safety
Checkpoint
This
past Friday evening (May
29th), the Bonifay Police
Department conducted two
separate Roadside
Safety Checkpoints
winding up the Memorial
Dave Wave of the 2009
Click it or Ticket
Campaign. This wave
lasted from May 11th
through May 31st. The
first checkpoint was
located on County Road
177-A near Whites
Small Engine Repair. This
checkpoint was
operational from 5:00pm
to 7:00pm. The second
checkpoint was from
7:00pm to 9:00pm and
located at the
intersection of County
Road 173 and St.
Johns Road. At both
locations all vehicles
traveling in both lanes
of traffic were stopped
and checked for
compliance with Florida
traffic laws. Several
hundred vehicles traveled
through the checkpoints,
but not all of them were
within the law. There was
one arrest made on
outstanding charges and
two vehicles were towed
for lack of insurance. A
total of 24 warning
citations were written
along with 18 uniform
traffic citations (UTCs).
Included in the 18 UTCs
were seven seatbelt
violations, one driving
while license
suspended/revoked, one
child restraint and one
open container violation.
The purpose of conducting
these safety checkpoints
is to inform the
community of the dangers
of unsafe equipment and
to make sure all vehicles
traveling are compliant
with safety standards. We
want our community to
stay safe and by
conducting these
checkpoints we can inform
people about unsafe
equipment on their
vehicles that they
otherwise would not have
seen or known about. This
might help prevent them
from being involved in a
motor vehicle accident in
the future.

infractions and equipment
violations. There was one
arrest for driving under
the influence and eleven
uniform traffic citations
issued. This included
three open container

Sweepstakes
& Lottery Type Scam
On the afternoon
of April 14th, 2009, an
officer with the Bonifay
Police Department
responded to a local
residence in reference to
receiving a check in the
mail for $4,195.10 along
with a letter stating
that she had won a
sweepstakes for a total
of $125,000. The letter
told the local resident
to deposit the check into
her bank account and then
withdrawl $3,991.00 from
her checking account and
send it by Western Union
or Money Gram to pay for
the Government Taxes. She
was told once she sent
the money, they would
send her the full
winnings of $125,000. The
local resident was
suspicious of receiving
the check and notified
the police department.
Upon investigating the
check and the letter it
was found that this was a
scam and the company is
known all over the USA
for this type of scam.
This resident
done the right thing by
not sending any money to
the prize company listed
in the letter. These
companies prey on people
hoping that they deposit
the check into their bank
(banks hold checks up to
10 days) and immediately
send the money by wire
transfer the same day
they deposit the check
only to find out after
the 10 days the bank
informs the victim that
the check is not any
good...by this time the
victim is usually out the
money that was sent.
***PLEASE
REMEMBER IF IT SOUNDS TOO
GOOD TOO BE TRUE....CHECK
THE DETAILS BEFORE YOU
SEND ANY MONEY
IF YOU WIN A
PRIZE OR LOTTERY TYPE
DRAWING YOU DO NOT HAVE
TO SEND MONEY TO GET YOUR
WINNINGS.
If you have
received a letter and
check in the mail like
this please contact the
Bonifay Police
Department. If you are
unsure or suspicious of a
sweepstakes or lottery
claim you can contact the
police department and we
can let you know if we
have any reports of fraud
