Halloween Safety Tips

The Bonifay Police Department

would like everyone to have a fun and safe Halloween.

  • While trick or treating please make sure their is an adult or responsible older youth with all children while they are away from home.
  • Costumes and accessories should be bright, reflective, flame resistant and fit well.

Add reflective tape or striping to costumes and Trick-or-Treat bags.

Carry a Flashlight or Glow Sticks to help with visibility of motorists and to prevent injuries.

Before using fake or toy knives, guns or swords, make sure they are soft and flexible to prevent injury and they do not appear authentic.

Stay in a group, walk slowly and make sure parents know where the children are trick or treating.

Make sure children only trick or treat in well known neighborhoods and only go to homes that have their porch light on.

Stay on sidewalks and only travel in well lit areas. Do not cut across yards and do not run.

If you have to cross any street please use caution and remove any masks or costumes covering your face so you can see in all directions before crossing the street. Motorists might not see you until the last second so try not to cross between parked cars and make sure the street is clear before crossing.

DO NOT ENTER ANY STRANGER'S CAR OR HOME !!!

Warn your child that if someone tries to grab them, to make a scene by yelling, kicking, and run away and notify law enforcement.

Make sure your child has some type of identification with them while they are trick or treating in case they get lost or seperated from any adults or group. Make sure their name, addresss, phone number and parents name and contact information is written on the indentification.

Let your child carry a cell phone and make sure they know how to dial 911.

Tell children not to accept and not to eat anything that isn't commercially wrapped.

  • Inspect commercially wrapped treats for signs of tampering, such as an unusual appearance or discoloration, tiny pinholes, or tears in wrappers. Throw away anything that looks suspicious.
  • If your child encounters any suspicious person, someone attempts to grab them, or receive suspicious candy and treats....

Notify the Bonifay Police Department immediately by calling 547-3661.

If it is an Emergency dial

Please have a safe Halloween. If you have any questions please contact the Bonifay Police Department.
